Who is UGSJ?

Raised in Renforth, NB, I left Saint John for university and came back for my career.  When I came back I moved into an apartment in the South End with my fiancee and discovered just how great my “hometown” is…  now, I am married and we bought a house in the very same neighborhood.

Most of my childhood friends having moved on, I joined Fusion Saint John so that I could get involved and make new friends.  I can say with certainty, without Fusion, I probably wouldn’t have stayed.

My membership with Fusion led to my involvement/leadership in many of the big fundraising events in the city (Skate to Care, Dragon Boat Festival, Run for the Cure, Rally of Hope & the Germain St. Open), gave me the courage to return to the theatre (I have been involved in KV Players and Saint John Theatre Company shows), and, most importantly,  got me out of the house!

Now, I get out and enjoy myself whenever possible.  Sometimes that means hanging in my hammock in the back yard, other times it is walking the boarwalk/harbour passage or meeting friends for a drink at Happinez Wine Bar or Sebastian’s.  My latest “out of the box” adventure included a techno/house DJ performance at A Khord on Water St.  Not my usual scene, but when you see a poster on a bus shelter…

So where did you go to school? and what did you take there ? did you go overseas or did you go to like Fredericton?

I went to UNB Fredericton, then I went overseas… Africa, on a humanitarian adventure; then a European roadtrip. Actually, I did both my BA and BEd in Fredericton while living on campus, and when I finished had some money left over to take a trip with Habitat for Humanity.

So Uptowngirlsj, do you ever reveal your true identity?

I am not truly hiding… if someone asked me if I was Uptowngirlsj, I wouldn’t deny it. It’s just that, at least I think so, it is more interesting to read about someone who could be ‘anybody’ rather than Jane Doe!

I think I figured it out at the yardsale. It was exciting. Like spotting a celebrity.

I know the feeling… I now know what you look like, seeing as I sold you the old-school Nintendo!

It’s like we’re gumshoes in an old detective movie.. only with yard sale treasures instead of the Maltese Falcon.

I’m guessing you are Judith Mackin, but I could be wrong! Loving the mystery. Very cool.
