Merry Martinis Fundraiser

The second annual holiday Party with a Purpose with the Saint John Community Christmas Exchange as its purpose has gone upscale!  Partnering with Hilton Saint John, FUSION‘s Ambassadors Committee is pulling out all the stops to raise much needed funds for Saint Johners in need this holiday season.

The classy event will be held on Wednesday, December 8th, from 6-8pm.  Your $50 ticket will get you unlimited cocktails and appetizers in a festive setting.  Everyone who is anyone will be there, so don’t miss out!

Details can be found in the following article, as appeared in the Telegraph Journal on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010.

FUSION is putting a festive spin on its December Party with a Purpose, partnering with the Saint John Hilton to host Merry Martinis, an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres to kick off the holiday party season and support the Saint John Christmas Exchange.

This is the second year FUSION has supported the organization. This year they will be selling tickets in advance, which will give guests a chance to get into the holiday spirit with open bars, hor d’oeuvres and music.

The Saint John Christmas Exchange is a confidential central exchange service operated by community volunteers with the primary purpose of ensuring that no family in need goes without a Christmas dinner.

The group has been in operation for 30 years and works with approximately 60 churches in Greater Saint John to ensure that local families have food and gifts for the holidays by co-ordinating with the churches and service organizations to develop and maintain a registration list and link families in need to individuals, businesses and organizations to sponsor them, and make sure their holiday needs are met.

“Saint John’s high poverty rate is no secret – a sizeable percentage of families have significant difficulty making ends meet on a day-to-day basis,” says Merry Martinis co-chair Kelly Lawson. “Last year we adopted a family and helped out our less fortunate neighbours. This year we wanted to do something more, something bigger and better.”

Organizers are hoping to raise upwards of $6,000, which will be turned into grocery gift certificates for families in need. Saint John is a generous city, but despite the community’s best efforts, there are 200 to 300 families left without the help they need to get through the holidays every year.

Every ticket buyer will be participating in the donation – each Merry Martini ticket sold will provide a Saint John family with the funds for Christmas dinner.

“We wanted to create a signature holiday event, one that people anticipate because it’s fun and for a good cause,” said event co-chair Sean Payne. “This is the first year for Merry Martinis, and as time goes by we hope it will grow to be one of the signature charitable events of the holidays in the city.”

Merry Martinis will take place on Dec. 8, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre. Tickets are $50, and available at Scheherazade Books and Music on Prince William Street and Je Suis Prest in Brunswick Square.

YOU ARE INVITED!  Tomorrow, in the Ludlow Room of City Hall, the third season of Operation Red Nose Saint John will kick off with a bang!

Although not taking the helm this year, I am getting involved on the sponsorship and volunteer recruitment end.  I am excited for the provincial launch and to get going on this important initiative!  Once the details are released on Wednesday I will let you all in on them, but in the meantime visit FUSION’s website www.fusionsj.com and click the Operation Red Nose banner for information on how you can get involved.

SJTC is importantly being earnest

Exciting news, the Saint John Theatre Company starts its Main Stage season this month!  Although without a musical this year, much to my dismay, the season boasts 3 amazing plays.  Kicking it all off is The Importance of Being Earnest.  I am very much looking forward to this, wishing slightly that I could be involved somehow, and hope that anyone reading this who does not already have tickets will rush out and get some.  In fact, you should rush out and get season tickets!  What better way to support such an important local theatre company?

See you at the theatre!

Written by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Robert Moore.

What happens when two pretty girls both fall in love with men they believe to be called Ernest?  Will they learn that a rose by any other name still smells as sweet?  Earnest is the best-loved comedy of all time.  “A trivial comedy for serious people.”

Please spread the word about this great production!  For tickets call Imperial Theatre at 674-4100 or visit: https://www.imperialonline.nb.ca/peo/show.asp

2010-2011 Season subscriptions are also still available!  $70 for all three main stage shows (student & senior discounts also available)!

This Weekend in Saint John (Nov 4-7)

After almost a two month hiatus with a new baby, here is a long overdue installment of “This Weekend.”  The little man is napping all on his own now (I don’t have to hold him), even if it is just a short time,  and is giving me a bit of time to get back into the swing of things.  I am going to have to rename myself UptownGirlSJ+1 though, because baby comes with me to events now…  so if you are still in the dark about my identity, look for the 20-something with a baby exploring the uptown!

Here is what you can look forward to this weekend:

4 days left of CHOP CHOP Feastival for Foodies Week
Participating restaurants will offer you one or any combination of the following specials during the week:

3 Course Dinner for $30
2 Course Lunch for $12
Chop Chop Plate $10

Participating Restaurants: Alley Gria, Billy’s Seafood, Hilton, Burbon Quarter, Magnolia Café, Chilli and Olive, Church Street Steakhouse, Grannans, Happinez, Mexicali Rosas, Opera Bistro, Saint John Alehouse, Scores Grill, Steamers, Taco Pica, Thandi, Urban Deli
