Last night I attended a fabulous and unique fundraiser.  Now before you get angry with me for not giving a heads-up, it was sold out not long after I reserved my tickets so there was nothing I could do.  It was the perfect “Girls Night Out” and I got to spend it with 5 good friends and another 180 women from the greater Saint John area.

PGAL’s Closet (owner Patricia Gallagher) threw together a wonderful night of fun aroud the Empire Theatres Rothesay premier of Sex & The City 2 with 100% of the profits in support of First Steps Housing in Saint John.  It started with velvet rope and paparrazi getting shots of all us girls dressed up to the nines!  Then, upon entering the theatre, each lady had to choose their identity (Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda) and grab a signature cosmo on the way to the yummy spread at the front of the room.  There were music and prizes (best 4some, best shoes & best handbag) as well as haute couture decorations.

I have never had so much fun watching a movie.  First, the movie was everything an SATC fan could hope for (I must admit that I was skeptical going in…  not sure if a sequel would impress) and the laughter kept on coming.  Second, put 185 women high on anticipation and a few vodka drinks in the same room and the comments, hoots and hollers fly, SO FUN!  Third, the social before and after the movie really added to the whole feel of the movie: strong women supporting one another.

That last one was the whole point of the evening: women helping womenFirst Steps Housing supports pregnant and mothering teens who don’t have a safe place to live.  The organisation provides housing, education, parenting support and childcare for these young mothers.  Since it’s creation 8 years ago it has seen about 80 girls graduate high school, and even more to get the skills they need to end the cycle and raise happy, healthy children!  The Martini & a Movie night funds will be used to refurbish the common living space in the historic building that houses First Steps.

I sincerely hope that there are more of these events to come and I promise to let you in on the fun next time!
