Bean Books, bravo!

I love Bean Books.  There, I said it.  My heart beats for this fabulously intimate bookshop on the most beautiful street in Saint John.

Sarah Jones, creator/owner of Bean Books, could not have had a more perfect day for an opening.  It was sunny, birds were singing, and there was a concert on her front stoop.  Ok, so that was put on by Backstreet Records next door, but it might as well been on her stoop.

I got to the store about 5pm, drawn by my desire to check out this new entrepreneurial gem (and the music working it’s way down Germain), and the place was hopping.  There were readers curled up in the comfy wicker chairs, a group chatting with Sarah, and some standing in the doorway with their coffee listening to the music of “Got to Get Got.”

The store is perfect.  It is small, with uncluttered shelves (there is only one copy of each book displayed at a time) of wonderful -hand picked- fiction.  Sarah has wonderful taste and knows her stuff.  With her encouragement, I bought 2 books, costing me a whole $16.72.  Can you believe it?  For brand new books!  I asked Sarah how they could be so inexpensive.  She replied, “I have gotten good deals from a great supplier and books are so expensive, I want to pass on savings to the customer.”  Yay!

Not only does Sarah have great taste in books (I am half way through The Deportees and other stories by Roddy Doyle – awesome!) but she is a very talented artist.  Her shop walls are adorned with her oil on canvas paintings of uptown Saint John.  I can’t wait to put one on a wall in my new house!

In a word: GO!  With comfy chairs, great decor, fabulously inexpensive books and coffee (Java Moose) & tea (The Feel Good Store) for just a dollar, why the heck wouldn’t you?
